Old Cottages and Rebuilt Homes

Spray foam insulation in Ocean Springs covers some of the oldest settled ground on the Coast. Fort Maurepas, the first permanent French outpost in French Louisiana, was founded here in 1699. The name Ocean Springs dates to 1854, when a local doctor promoted its springs, and it became a resort town. Katrina's storm surge of about 28 feet destroyed many shoreline buildings in 2005. The 2020 census counted 8,264 housing units, 7.9 percent vacant.

Older cottages

Older houses in town often sit on piers or low crawl spaces, with wood floors and attics that have seen several rounds of patching. Closed-cell foam under the floor, attic sealing and depth, and duct sealing usually do the most good.

Raised and rebuilt homes

Homes rebuilt near the water were often raised. Their floors are exposed to humid air underneath, and closed-cell foam handles that well.

Climate

Ocean Springs has a subtropical climate with a hot, humid season from late spring to early autumn and frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

Live oaks and roofs

Ocean Springs is known for its big live oaks. Shade helps keep roofs cooler, but leaves, moss and damp can shorten a roof's life. We look at the underside of the roof deck for staining before covering anything with foam, since foam on the deck can make a future leak harder to spot.

Ducts in older homes

Older cottages that had central air added later often have ductwork snaked through tight attics or under the floor. Sealing those duct joints is part of the plan when we can reach them.
