Loose Fill Done Right

Blown-in insulation is the most cost-effective way to add R-value to an open attic floor. Loose cellulose or fiberglass is blown through a hose into an even layer that fills around joists, wiring and fixtures. For a Coast home whose ductwork is not in the attic, or where the budget does not stretch to roof-deck foam, sealing the ceiling and blowing in to depth is often the best buy.

Materials

HomeGuide lists blown fiberglass at about R-2.2 to R-2.9 per inch and cellulose at R-3.1 to R-3.8. Fixr puts fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. Cellulose packs more R-value per inch; fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb moisture.

Air sealing first

Loose fill does not stop air. We seal top plates, fixtures, stacks and the hatch before blowing so hot attic air stops leaking down.

Depth

ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic, or adding R-38 over 3 to 4 inches. We leave depth markers so you can check.

Over ductwork

Where ducts lie on the attic floor, burying them in loose fill reduces heat gain, once the duct joints are sealed. We look at the duct layout first.

Fiberglass vs cellulose in humid climates

Fiberglass does not absorb water; cellulose is treated with borates and packs more R-value per inch. Both work well in a dry, vented attic. If the attic has had moisture problems, we fix those first.

Attics with low clearance

Some low-slope roofs leave little room near the eaves. We install baffles to keep soffits open and plan depth accordingly.
