Where Summer Gets In

Attic insulation and air sealing is the first upgrade for most Coast homes. A sun-baked roof turns the attic into the hottest space on the property, and thin insulation lets that heat radiate down into the rooms below. Gaps around light fixtures, ceiling fans, plumbing stacks, the attic hatch and the tops of interior walls let hot attic air leak straight in.

Seal, then insulate

We seal those gaps first with foam and caulk, weatherstrip and insulate the hatch or pull-down stairs, and then blow in cellulose or fiberglass to depth. ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic, or R-38 added over 3 to 4 inches. With blown fiberglass around R-2.2 to R-2.9 per inch and cellulose R-3.1 to R-3.8 (HomeGuide), that is over a foot of loose fill.

Ducts in the attic

Most local homes run ductwork through the attic. Leaky duct joints lose cooled air into the attic and pull hot air in. Sealing the ducts helps either way. If the ducts are extensive, foaming the roof deck instead can bring them inside the conditioned space.

Ventilation

A vented attic needs open soffits. We install baffles before insulation reaches the eaves.

Storm damage

After a roof leak or storm, wet insulation should come out. We check for stains and damp before adding anything.

Radiant barriers

Some Coast homes have a radiant barrier under the roof deck. It reduces radiant heat from the roof, but it does not replace insulation or air sealing on the attic floor. We work with what is there.

When the ceiling needs repair

If ceiling drywall has sagged or stained from past leaks, it should be fixed before insulation is added. We point out what we see.

Comparing quotes

Ask each insulation company for the same lines: air sealing, insulation material, depth and target R-value. Those numbers make bids comparable.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

How much attic insulation do I need in Biloxi?

ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic, or adding R-38 over 3 to 4 inches.

Is blown-in or foam better for my attic?

If ducts are not in the attic, sealed and blown-in is usually the better value. If they are, roof-deck foam may be worth it.

Does a radiant barrier replace insulation?

No. It can reduce radiant heat but does not replace insulation or air sealing.

How long does an attic job take?

Usually a day for sealing and blowing in.
